African Footballers and Their Role in Community Development and Cultural Activism
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines the evolving role of African footballers as agents of community development and cultural activism. Employing a comparative narrative inquiry, the study analyzes how prominent sports figures leverage their global fame and social capital to effect meaningful change in their home communities, addressing critical developmental challenges and reshaping the socio-cultural fabric of African societies. Through detailed case studies of Didier Drogba and Sadio Mané, the analysis reveals this athlete-led development model's tangible impacts and inherent limitations. The findings indicate that these initiatives have delivered critical infrastructure in healthcare and education, yet they face significant challenges related to governance, dependency, and long-term sustainability. This article critically assesses the complex interplay between individual charisma and institutional frameworks, situating these philanthropic efforts within broader discourses of neocolonialism and the Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) sector. Ultimately, the study contributes to a nuanced understanding of the potential of athlete-led activism in Africa and offers policy recommendations to foster more integrated and sustainable development outcomes.
