Abstract

Religious conflict continues to undermine peace and social cohesion in Northern Nigeria despite numerous political, security, and interfaith interventions. While existing studies have largely focused on the political, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions of these conflicts, limited attention has been given to the application of Augustinian theology as a framework for sustainable peacebuilding. This study examined the relevance of Augustinian theology of peace and justice in addressing religious conflict in Kano, Kaduna, and Jos. A mixed-method research design was adopted, using structured questionnaires and document analysis of Augustine's theological writings, relevant literature, and selected peacebuilding initiatives. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data from open-ended questionnaire responses and documentary sources were analysed thematically. The findings indicate that religious extremism, injustice, poor governance, socio-economic inequality, and mutual distrust are major drivers of religious conflict. They further demonstrate that Augustinian principles of justice, love, reconciliation, and the common good provide a practical ethical framework for strengthening peacebuilding and interreligious dialogue. The study recommends integrating these principles into peacebuilding policies and initiatives to promote sustainable peace in Northern Nigeria
