Abstract

Christianity has a significant influence on attitudes towards technology, reproduction, and health in Nigeria, where infertility is predominantly perceived via spiritual and cultural lenses. To balance religion with medical progress, the Nigerian Churches have concerns about the theological and ethical issues that emanated as a result of the introduction of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) such as IVF, PGD and surrogacy in solving infertility cases. Unfortunately, due to expensive prices, a lack of theological guidance, and significant cultural prejudices, ART acceptance is restricted in Nigeria; therefore, many couples turn to spiritual treatments and encounter ethical quandaries if they choose to explore advanced medical and technological procedures. In Lagos, 2572 Christians of different denominations participated in a mixed-method study that examined their views on ARTs from a medical and Christian perspective. Results revealed increasing awareness of ARTs but persistent moral and doctrinal confusion. Many participants viewed ARTs as medically beneficial yet spiritually questionable. Socio-economic barriers and emotional distress were also significant challenges for infertile couples. The Church should provide contextual theological education, pastoral counselling, and advocacy for ethical medical practice. Collaboration between clergy, bioethicists, and healthcare providers is vital for guiding couples responsibly. Integrating faith with medical science offers a compassionate, ethical, and practical path for addressing infertility among Nigerian Christians.
