Biblical Monotheism and African Traditional Religions: A Contextual Study
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study explores the intersection of African cultural and religious contexts with biblical monotheism, applying Comparative Theory of Theology as its framework. Using a qualitative approach combining literature review and textual analysis, the study examines the concept of monotheism in African Traditional Religions (ATR) and its similarities and differences with biblical monotheism. The findings highlight ATR's complexities and diversity, emphasizing harmony with nature and ancestor veneration. The study reveals diverse interpretations of biblical monotheism in African cultures, often blending traditional beliefs with Christian narratives. To promote a deeper understanding of biblical teachings and foster mutual respect, the study recommends approaching biblical teachings with sensitivity towards African cultures, contextualizing biblical teachings using African proverbs and storytelling traditions, supporting African biblical scholars, and investing in language and cultural studies. By doing so, the study aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of biblical monotheism in African contexts, highlighting the crucial role of African scholars in facilitating this process and promoting a vibrant expression of faith in Africa. Ultimately, the study seeks to foster greater appreciation and respect between cultural groups through cultural sensitivity, contextualization, and scholarly engagement.
